"Will Play For Lynch: A George Lynch Tribute" (2003 Sacred Serpent Productions)

Today tribute CDs consist of musicians signed to various labels, giving the players ample resources to express there inspiration for their heroes. This is one of those tribute CDs made by fans for fans. The artists involved aren’t sitting behind mixing consoles in expenses recording studios but rather utilizing their creative resources with PCs, drum machines and home recording equipment.

That said many aspiring guitarist have been influenced by George Lynch. I count me self as one of those guitarists who was mesmerized by Lynch's playing in the 80s and 90s. I still believe today that George's playing is as relevant today as it was 20 years ago.

Pound for pound the best two tracks on this tribute CD are the instrumental tracks "Rain" and "Mr. Scary." Every Lynch fan knows the song "Rain" from the debut Lynch Mob CD featuring Oni Logan on vocals. Taking a simplified approach Chad Coggin simply plays the vocal parts on the guitar. Making the song into a very nice instrumental track. Jay Parmar handles the guitar duties on "Mr. Scary." Is that George on guitar? Wow! Jay really nails the essence of this song.

The assortment of vocalist on this CD had their hands full singing these classic Lynch songs. The best vocal performance on the tribute CD is "Burning Like A Flame," sung by Glen Poland. A top notch performance he comes close to a sounding like Don Dokken. Other notable mentions are the vocalists on "Will the Sun Rise," "Wicked Sensation," "River of Love" and "For A Million Years."

The music presented here is a close representation of the original artist recordings with each guitarist putting his own stamp on each song. It took allot to put this project together and Jay Parmar deserves credit for pulling it off. My hats off to him for all his fine work.

Bottom Line: The downside of the CD on some songs is the quality of the recordings. Considering the cost and limitations on the artists involved you can’t fault them. That also doesn't hide the talent that is exposed from these artists. From the perspective of a musician I am really impressed with the undiscovered talent that is out there. Good job to all involved.
